Pioneers blast new US vision of space exploration

The first and last men to walk on the moon have labelled the new space programme introduced by Barack Obama, the US president, a mission to nowhere.

Obama had announced plans to cancel Nasa's Constellation programme, which will end US plans for future exploration of the moon.

Instead, the focus will shift to building a space craft that can take astronauts to Mars.

But that is a vision not shared by some pioneers of the US space programme.
