The Pikmin franchise has attracted a large audience since its debut on Nintendo's GameCube in 2001 and since then, Pikmin has received a sequel on the GameCube and rerelease on Nintendo's Wii platform. Announced during Nintendo's E3 2012 press conference, the Wii U, launching later this year, will further the Pikmin franchise with Pikmin 3 utilizing the revolutionary GamePad exclusive to the Wii U platform. The announcement of Pikmin 3 during E3 2012 brought everyone within Nokia Theatre to their feet providing a standing ovation for the long awaited rebirth of the Pikmin series.

While covering E3 2012, Nick D'Orazio, correspondent of The Gamer Access, had the opportunity to speak with Gil Ruta, media representative for Nintendo, on Pikmin 3 and how it will take advantage of the new hardware and GamePad controller provided by Nintendo's Wii U.
