NOTE: Arthur Gibbs and his Gang were the first to record James P. Johnson's and Cecil Mack's "Charleston" - the song that became synonymous with the 1920s. It was originally featured in the musical comedy "Runnin' Wild". Arthur Gibbs was a black pianist and from ca 1923 he led his own orchestra, which was featured on the record labels as "Gang". In mid- and late 1920s. Arthur Gibbs' band was playing at the Savoy and Arcadia Ballrooms in NYC.
