After a unanimous 14 to 0 vote, lawmakers in Los Angeles, California have voted to shut down medical marijuana dispensaries that are operating in the city. The council also made a motion to draft an ordinance that will allow 170 marijuana dispensaries that have been open for many years, to remain in business. Under the ban, only the 170 city approved dispensaries will be allowed to distribute medical marijuana to patients, while the rest of the 762 dispensaries will be forced to close their doors. It is still legal for patients who are allowed to have medical marijuana as recommended by their doctor to possess, sell, and distribute marijuana to other medical marijuana patients, but only in small groups of no more than 3 people.

Medicinal Marijuana can have unintended consequences. A child in California was hospitalized after accidentally eating his grandmother’s medicinal marijuana cookies that she baked to treat her painful cancer symptoms. Police are unsure about how much the child consumed, but after he didn’t wake up for many hours, the family contacted police. The three year old has been treated and released from the hospital, and the grandmother says she will never make the cookies again.
