STORY: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dania Ramirez sped through city streets as bicycle messengers in their new film "Premium Rush."

The actors dodged New York City taxicabs, speeding cars, policemen and irate pedestrians while running from a shady detective, played by Michael Shannon.

The other main attraction of the film was the "fixie," or fixed-gear bicycle, a lightweight single-gear bike with no brakes, ridden by Gordon-Levitt.

"You put your feet into these cages and whether you move your feet back or forward you're connected, whereas a bike that coasts, it feels more like a vehicle that you're riding on top of," said the 31-year-old actor. "But these fixed-gear bikes, it just feels like there's wheels attached to your legs," he added.

"Premium Rush" freewheels into theaters on August 24.
