PLEASE NOTE: ROUGH TRANSLATION OF MANDARIN SOUNDBITE

"Dangerous Liaisons" is getting another movie adaptation - its fifth to date.

This time the story is set in 1930s Shanghai and features "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" star Zhang Ziyi .

The movie is entirely in Mandarin, but at its Toronto Film Festival premiere (September 10) the actress, a super star in her native China, felt confident it would appeal to Western audiences, too.

SOUNDBITE: Ziyi Zhang, saying (English):

"I think it is, compared to other Chinese movies, for Western audiences they know the story already so it is easier for them to watch this film even though it's still in subtitles."

Based on the French literary classic "Dangerous Liaisons" sees Zhang play a naive, young woman, who falls victim to a destructive love game devised by a womanizing playboy and his former girlfriend - but things get more complicated than planned, and this tragedy looks set to end in tears.

The film is slated for an end of September opening in China and will receive a limited release worldwide.
