Japan Says No Sign of Chinese Patrol Ships by Disputed Islands

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman declined to provide details about the two ships sent to waters near the disputed Diaoyu Islands.

Chinese state-run media had reported earlier that two patrol ships, Numbers 46 and 49, from the China Marine Surveillance have been dispatched. It followed Japan’s announcement to purchase the island groups in the East China Sea, called Senkaku Islands in Japan.

But as of Wednesday, Japan’s government says it has not spotted any Chinese patrol ships in the area.

A report by Xinhua on Wednesday also seemed to further cloud the details. Xinhua no longer specified two ships were sent, just that a patrol ship or ships had arrived near the Diaoyu Islands on Tuesday morning.

When asked about the matter on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei gave a non-descript reply, saying Chinese patrol ships will be carrying out usual marine law enforcement activities in marine territories controlled by China.

The small, uninhabited islands have been a source of growing tensions between China and Japan. The Chinese regime has called Japan’s purchase of the islands “illegal and invalid.” China, Japan and Taiwan all have competing claims over the Diaoyu Islands.
