Gold Coast Queensland, Saturday, January 29, 2011: Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW) edged one step closer to securing a junior surfing world record USD$25,000 first place prize as he advanced into the Round of 16 at the 2011 Hurley Pro Junior -- Burleigh Heads.
Competitors were greeted this morning with a significant increase in swell, with 1.5-2m waves reeling down the infamous Gold Coast right-hand pointbreak of Burleigh Heads.
Callinan's classic backhand attack was perfectly suited to the larger waves today, as he posted a combined two-wave heat total of 12.50 (out of a possible 20), advancing to the next round in second place behind Brazilian Krystian Kymerson (15.00) and eliminating Creed MctTaggart (Margaret River, WA -- 7.50) and Logan Specht (North Stradbroke Island, Qld -- 2.65) who finished third and fourth respectively.
