Wounded children are wheeled away on gurneys.

They were at Sunday school in Nairobi when attackers threw a hand grenade into a church killing a nine-year-old and wounding three others with shrapnel.

"We were just worshipping God in church when we suddenly heard an explosion and people started running for their lives but unfortunately we came to realize that the explosion had injured some kids who were taken to hospital and unfortunately one succumbed."

Police searched a number of witnesses at the scene as part of a preliminary investigation. They were later taken away for questioning.

A local member of parliament condemned the violence and urged the government to hunt down the perpetrators.

"It is very sad, it is really very sad that this is happening and it is happening to the churches."

There've been a series of grenade attacks in Kenya since it sent troops across the border into Somalia last October in pursuit of Islamist militants.

This latest outrage follows a surprise offensive by Kenyan and Ugandan troops on al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab militants in southern Somalia.
