Artist and musician Yoko Ono spoke on Monday (October 8) about the importance of awards for activists, and paid tribute to United States pop queen Lady Gaga for risking her popularity for fighting for the rights of homosexuals and transgender people.

Ono was speaking in Iceland where she will hand out the biannual LennonOno Grant for Peace on Tuesday (October 9).

This year, the prize is being awarded for the fourth time, and Ono said it was important to reward activism because activists had the ability to change the world.

SOUNDBITE Yoko Ono saying (English):

"Choosing Lady Gaga, was strangely enough the most controversial thing to do, because people think: Why Lady Gaga? What does she do?, you know, and Lady Gaga is in a position of number one, as a singer songwriter, in her age, and when you are number one you don't want to risk yourself. And she did. It's incredible, and by risking her position she made sure that certain things are corrected in the world, very important things."

After Tuesday's ceremony there will be the lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower on an island off the Icelandic capital. The tower was created by Ono in memory of her husband John Lennon, one of the world's must influential songwriters.
