NVOBrahimi, Assad discuss Syria holiday truce

International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi meets with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Sunday.

Syrian state television, which aired this footage, gave no details of the talks, though they likely relate to Brahimi's call for a ceasefire during the Islamic Eid al-Adha holiday at the end of this week.

The joint Arab League-U.N. special envoy for the Syria crisis has been crisscrossing the region with the aim of convincing Assad's main backers and foes to support the idea of a holiday truce.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting with Assad, Brahimi said he had received positive responses from opposition figures -- but he refused to comment on the government's position.

On Saturday he held talks with Syria's foreign minister, which the government official described as "constructive and serious".

Syria has so far given a guarded response, suggesting it wants guarantees that rebels would reciprocate any move by Assad's forces.
