Dave Brubeck dies; "Skyfall" tops UK box office

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, a towering figure in modern jazz, has died at the age of 91. Brubeck died of heart failure on his way to a regular medical exam. His Dave Brubeck Quartet put out one of the biggest selling jazz songs of all time: "Take Five," composed by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. Like many of the group's works, it had an unusual beat -- 5/4 time as opposed to the usual 4/4. "Take Five" was the first million-selling jazz single.
"Skyfall," the 23rd official James Bond movie, has become the most successful film in British box office history, earning 94.3 million pounds ($152 million). The figure, earned over 40 days, surpasses the previous record of 94 million pounds set by "Avatar" over its 11 month run in UK cinemas, although the figures do not take inflation into account.
Alicia Keys is hot with her fifth studio album, "Girl on Fire," earning a top spot on the weekly Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 159,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, although it is the lowest in sales compared with her three previous studio albums that also reigned at No. 1. Her fourth studio album released in 2009, "The Element of Freedom," hit the No. 2 mark with 417,000 copies sold.
In an event that featured one of the biggest pyrotechnic displays in the history of Sunset Strip, "Blues Brothers'' Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the House of Blues. Jim Belushi took over the role from founding Blues Brother and real life brother John Belushi, who died in 1982. Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top performed, along with Deer Tick and Flogging Molly.
