150-Year-Old Loaded Cannon Discovered in Central Park

Officials discover that a display cannon at Central Park is still filled with gunpowder.

New York's Central Park Conservancy employees recently had a very exciting day.

Workers had been cleaning an antique rusted cannon from the Revolutionary War Era, but they were shocked to discover that it was stuffed with 1.8 pounds of black gunpowder and a cannonball. The cannon had been given to New York City by an anonymous donor in 1865.

Even more shocking is the fact that the cannon was last used more than 200 years ago, but it was still fully capable of firing.
It had been placed on public display until 1996 when officials made the decision to bring it indoors to avoid occurrences of vandalism.

Police removed the gunpowder and brought it to a gun range for proper disposal.

Last year, a man named Matt Tucker had been fishing in Springfield, Missouri when he pulled a Vietnam-era live hand grenade inside a sock. A staff Sergeant commented - "The pin was still in it. Based on the X-rays we saw, I'm going to call it armed".
The grenade was put inside a box and sent to a bomb disposal location.
