A missing French-owned oil tanker flying the Luxembourg flag is believed to have been hijacked by Nigerian pirates off the coast of Ivory Coast.

The International Maritime Bureau said on Monday that the owner lost contact with the vessel on Sunday. The Gascogne has 17 crew members, though the nationalities of the crew were withheld due to the ongoing incident.

Attacks on ships in the Gulf of Guinea have been on the rise; it is second only to the waters around Somalia in terms of piracy. If the hijacking is confirmed, it would be the second seizure off Ivory Coast in less than three weeks.
