J.J. Abrams to Produce Half-Life and/or Portal Film? - Nick's Gaming View Episode #132

Valve looks to produce Portal or Half-Life film with J.J. Abrams, KickStarter-funded console hitting retail this June, and groundbreaking 2012 revenue numbers hit the public, THIS IS NICK’S GAMING VIEW!

Hello everyone and welcome to Nick’s Gaming View, you are here with your host, Nick McCandless. Just a couple weeks after J.J. Abrams was announced the Director of Star Wars Episode VII; the well-known movie director has found himself possibly involved in a collaboration with Valve according to Valve’s co-founder, Gabe Newell. During the DICE keynote, Gabe Newell was quoted saying “We’re going to try and figure out if we can make a Half-Life movie or a Portal movie together.” Must say, as much I would like to see a Half-Life movie actually come to life, especially with such a talented director behind the film, as a gamer, I would really like to see Valve put all of their focus into a Half-Life 3 since you know, Half Life 2 released over seven years ago!

The incredibly successful KickStarter-funded Android gaming console, Ouya, will be headed to the doorsteps of those who backed the project this March, but for those who are interested and did not fund the project, you will just have to wait a few extra months. Priced at $99.99 with over 200 games in development for optimization on the Ouya, Ouya will be making its ways to Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, and Target this June including a controller, which is nice considering additional controllers will cost a whopping, $50! Not very often you see a console’s controller cost half of the console, but regardless, it will be an interesting summer seeing how well the console KickStarter gave birth to, performs.

Wrapping up Nick’s Gaming View, research from the 2012 Games Market Dynamics team from The NPD Group, have released impressive revenue numbers highlighting their performance of video games in the United States during 2012. Rolling in a total of $14.80 billion with $7.09 billion coming from new physical game software, $1.79 billion from used and rental expenditures, and $5.92 billion from digital formatted content, to say 2012 was a successful year for the video game industry is an understatement, I can only imagine how its going to perform once Sony and Microsoft unleash their next consoles.
