The chain is halting sales of its trademark meatballs in 13 European countries after Czech inspectors found a batch contained horsemeat.

A company official says the meatballs in question were on sale in countries including Britain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands.

According to IKEA, the frozen meatballs made by a Swedish supplier should only contain beef and pork.

The find has prompted the company to carry out further investigations.

The European horsemeat scandal has prompted widespread product withdrawals and inquiries into the meat industry.
