Microsoft Xbox 720 always-on connection turns consumers off

Early rumored specs and reports have hinted that the Xbox 720 could be an "always-on" device, which means that players would require an internet connection to play any game.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the rumors, but Microsoft's creative director Adam Orth pretty much confirmed the rumors by himself last week. Orth was having a discussion over Twitter with Bioware Designer Manveer Heir when he tweeted "every device is now 'always on'....That's the world we live in". He then ended with the hashtag "#dealwithit".

Orth and Heir, who claim to be friends, exchanged a few tweets back and forth where Orth seemed to defend the "always-on" function. "Always-on" may help keep piracy rates down, but did the Microsoft executives already forget what happened to Diablo III and Sim City with their latest DRM debacles?

Requiring gamers to have internet connection for games that don't even require internet access may turn off a lot of potential buyers. And let's not forget that the US still has a lot of people that can't even afford internet connection let alone have reliable access to high speed internet. Microsoft might want to cut down on piracy and used games, but if they include "always-on" into the 720, the only thing they will cut are their sales.
