Rib Used to Make Ear for Deaf Man

A rib is used to make an ear for a deaf man.

A Scottish man recently got an ear implant that was partially made from his own rib.

Brian Hogg was previously unable to wear conventional hearing aids due to his hereditary condition, Treacher Collins Syndrome.

The groundbreaking device pairs the piece of rib with a bone conduction implant.

The doctor who performed the surgery explained how it works. He said, "A discreet audio processor, which is attached to the patient's head, picks up sound waves which are then amplified by the implant and passed to the inner ear through the skull bone.”

Hogg reported he is now able to hear a wider range of sounds and at greater distances.

He also noted that the device is nearly weightless and offers great sound quality.

The director of the lab that designed and made the implant feels that the new hearing implant, a culmination of decades of work, will better the lives of many patients.

A team of German scientists has made a breakthrough in the implant arena as well. They are approaching the final testing phase of an aid that is small enough to be implanted without surgery.
