Officials say an Algerian man convicted of being a member of a Chechen network that planned attacks in France has escaped house arrest in a stolen car.

Said Arif was awaiting expulsion from France after serving a prison term. He failed to report to police on Sunday morning.

Arif was convicted in 2007 of criminal association and served part of a 10-year sentence.
