Shifting gears could help to keep driving teenagers safe.
Smartphones and driving can be a seriously bad combination, so one teen’s parents decided to take a proactive approach to keeping their son safe.
They bought their kid a car with a manual transmission, so his hands will be too busy shifting to do any texting and surfing.
The new driver, Riley, said that managing the gears and the steering wheel does indeed keep his focus on driving, especially when navigating city traffic.
He’s not the only one at his high school who was given a vehicle with a stick shift. Riley’s noticed a lot of his classmates’ parents are doing the same.
If buying your teen a car isn’t your preferred solution, Allstate Insurance has several suggestions to keep them safe regardless of what they’re driving.
One recommendation is to teach by example. Statistically, teens don’t text and drive significantly more than adults do, and if they see you doing it they’re more likely to think its ok.
