Principal investigator of the study, Dan Thornton from the University of Manchester in England said: “These bursts gave off more energy in a millisecond than the sun does in 300,000 years.”
The international team of researchers working on the study is from a variety of institutions in several countries including the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, Germany and Australia.
They have recorded a series of four FRBs that they think happened anywhere from 5 point 5 to 10 billion light years away, which leads them to believe that an FRB happens about once every ten seconds.
Scientists might be able to measure how much normal matter exists in the universe, by counting the electrons between Earth and the origin of the bursts.
The source of FRBs is thought to be extreme astrophysical reactions from cosmic objects like neutron stars or black holes, but their true origin is still unknown.
