The University of Maryland Eastern Shore professors will be getting bulletproof whiteboards for the new school year.

Not on the traditional list of back-to-school supplies, but this year University of Maryland Eastern Shore professors will be getting bulletproof whiteboards for the new school year.

The 18 inch by 20 inch board can be used as both a bullet-deflecting shield and a writing surface, depending upon which is needed at the time.

Following the tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary School last year and the 2007 massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech,, nationwide there is an increased emphasis on safety.

In the case of Eastern Shore, located in the town of Princess Anne, administrators decided it was best to be proactive rather than possibly suffer consequences later.

Each board costs just under 300 dollars, and the school placed a 60 thousand dollar order with the company that manufactures them.

A vice president from the university commented that though the boards wouldn’t protect someone from a bazooka, they were at least something.

He also called the boards an alternative to arming teachers.

The manufacturer of the product sees them as a way to buy some time, whether they’re used individually or in a group to form a protective wall.
