Bulletproof whiteboards for Minnesota school

Bullet proof whiteboards - one of the latest devices designed to protect students from school shootings.

In Cold Springs, Minnesota, Police Chief Phil Jones demonstrates.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF PHIL JONES, COLD SPRING POLICE SAYING :

"If you want a safe school -- start building a safe school. Start adding layers of protection."

The boards are made with some of the lightest body armour in the world and were created in response to a shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last December in which 20 children and six adults were killed.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) GEORGE TUNIS, INVENTOR, HARDWIRE ARMOR SYSTEMS, SAYING:

"We set it up making something that would fit into the school environment... because my kids were scared and their teachers were scared."

The boards weigh just a few pounds and are less than an inch thick.

Police say they are an empowering tool to help teachers protect their students.
