When the Nintendo DS debuted in late 2004, the system wasn't immediately the massive success it would become. In fact, it wasn't until the release of this sleek new iteration in 2006 that the Nintendo DS platform became one of the most successful in gaming history. With nearly 100 million units shipped worldwide over the course of its five-year run, the Nintendo DS Lite was a juggernaut of a consumer device. By merging their playful approach to software with the minimalist hardware design of Apple, Nintendo found a balance between audiences that made the DS Lite a groundbreaking handheld. Unlike prior handhelds, the DS Lite didn't look like a toy, which made adults want the hardware as much as the DS's casual software. The system featured online multiplayer, as well local wireless play, and supported all Nintendo DS and Game Boy advance games. Its screen quality and brightness was also a huge improvement over the original Nintendo DS. The system was originally available in North America in white, black and pink, and would pretty much take over the world eventually. This video review features gameplay footage of the DS Lite from Nintendo and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
