In yet another case of human-animal conflict, two men were injured after a bear attacked them in Tumkur city on Tuesday.

The bear entered BG Palya Street late on Monday and sneaked into the kitchen of Hanumesh's house through the backdoor. Around 3am, when Hanumesh's daughter went to the kitchen to drink water, she saw the animal and cried for help. Hearing her, Hanumesh rushed to the kitchen and tried to drive it out when the bear attacked him and escaped.Later it went to a godown and attacked security guard Seebaiah who was resting outside. The residents who rushed to his help informed police and the forest department. Nagarathna, a resident, said: "We couldn't open the doors of our houses ever since we got to know about the bear."

After a long drama that went on till 6am, the bear was tranquilized and captured with the help of two veterinary doctors from Bannerghatta National Park. A noisy crowd made the task tougher, said forest officials.

The animal is believed to have strayed into the city from Gollahalli forest area. District forest officer Devaraju said the bear is around five years old and has been shifted to Bannerghatta National Park.

Hanumesh was taken to a Tumkur hospital from where he was shifted to Bangalore as his condition is said to be serious. Seebaiah is in a Tumkur hospital where he's out of danger.

NUMBERS RISE

The district has been witness to increasing bear attacks for the past few months. More than four cases were reported from Gubbi, Tiptur and Tumkur taluks. The city is surrounded by Namadhachilimae, Devarayanadurga and Gollahalli forest areas. Officials attribute the straying of animals into cities to shrinking forest areas.
