Shirley Temple Black, who was one of Hollywood's best known child stars, has died at the age of 85.

She passed away from natural causes Monday night at her California home.

As a child actress, Shirley Temple lifted America's spirits during the Great Depression with her dancing and singing. She became famous by the age of 6.

She was only 17 when she married her first husband, John Agar, who would later appear with her in two movies.

In her later years, Temple Black went on to become a U.S. diplomat.

She was appointed ambassador to Ghana and Prague and became the first female White House chief of protocol.
