Man shot dead by police in Cincinnati after stabbing mother to death

A Cincinnati man was shot dead by officers after he admitted to stabbing his mother to death early Monday morning and aiming a gun at police that turned out to not have been loaded.
Gregory Sanders, 37, went to the home of his neighbor, Mark Foster, to tell him he had killed his mother. Foster was in shock and called 911 to report Sanders' actions around 5 a.m.
Within minutes, four officers responded to the call and approached his house at Lincoln Avenue in Walnut Hills. They saw Sanders sitting in his living room with a rifle nearby.
Despite their orders for him to drop his weapon, Sanders raised his rifle into a "firing position" toward officers outside his residence, and the officers retreated back to their vehicles. Three of them were prompted to open fire. About 20 rounds were fired, with one headshot and multiple shots to the torso. Sanders died at the scene.
Soon after, police found the body of his mother, 59-year-old Deborah Jean Sanders.
Officers also learned the older model Chinese-made Type 24 "Chiang Kai-shek" rifle, with a bayonet attached to the front, was not loaded and no ammo for the gun was found inside the home.
An investigation into the fatal shooting is in progress. The police involved, all veterans, are on mandatory seven-days' leave while the department conducts an investigation.
