App Review: Monument Valley - Puzzle highlight of the year (iOS / Android coming soon)

Monument Valley is a new title of the UK developer Ustwo . Ustwo have already brought us the crazy game Whale Trail, and Monument Valley is no less insane. Monument Valley is not only one of Apples highlights of the week, but also one of the most innovative and smartest puzzle games for mobile platforms in general. In terms of design and atmosphere Monument Valley reminds a little of the recently published and also innovative adventure-game Tengami. Monument Valley is available for iOS for € 3.59, an Android version will follow shortly.
In Monument Valley, you take control of Princess Ida. One can red in the AppStore description: " Monument Valley is a surreal exploration through fantastical architecture and impossible geometry. Guide the silent princess Ida through mysterious monuments, uncovering hidden paths, unfolding optical illusions and outsmarting the enigmatic Crow People." I can only agree to this description, because it hits the nail right on the head. You guide Ida with simple tap gestures through beautiful but also completely whacky level constructs. Your goal is to reach the end of each level. However, the level end is usually on a completely different layer and the path is incomplete or obstructed. With your finger you can now influence the level design, rotate platforms or move them back and forth or you can activate switches with Ida.
Review verdict of Monument Valley:
One of the strengths of Monument Valley is without doubt that the developers have managed to include the third dimension into the puzzles. Because often enough you don’t know what to do at the beginning of the level, until you realize by turning and pushing, how naturally a plattform fits to another part of the level so you can move forward. In addition, the developers have been able to make Monument Valley an audio-visual experience. The level designs do not only offer clever puzzles but also a wonderful and artistically ambitious vision. Furthermore, the sound of the game reacts with your actions, so that you can experience an impressive and atmospheric sound pattern. Another strength: The game requires absolutely no language skills and is suitable for all ages. Monument Valley is for me one of the highlights of the year 2014 so far. But unfortunately Monument Valley has one big disadvantage: The game comes to an end after one two hours already. Nevertheless Monument Valley gets a clear download recommendation from me.
