Slovenia PM Bratusek to step down on Monday

Slovenia’s Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek has said she will step down on Monday, May 5, after losing a contest for leadership of ruling party Pozitivna Slovenija (PS).

Bratusek announced that it would be “best for Slovenia” to hold early elections as soon as possible and she would, thus, be tendering her resignation after the weekend.

She lost out to Ljubljana’s mayor Zoran Jankovic in a contest for the PS leadership a week ago.

Bratusek’s policies have been credited with helping debt-ridden Slovenia avoid an international bailout last year.

She became premier in March 2013 after previous prime minister Janez Jansa lost a confidence vote in parliament over a corruption scandal.
