Bratusek is to miss out on a top EU job.
A committee of MEPs voted against her candidacy to become Energy Union commissioner by 112 votes to 13, with 2 abstentions.
Bratusek could be replaced by another Slovenian politician in the coming days.
Spain’s European Commission nominee has been confirmed.
Miguel Arias-Canete won the backing of parliamentarians, despite concern over his alleged links with the oil industry.
He should now take up the role of the EU’s energy and climate action commissioner.
In return, the centre-right parties have agreed to support French Socialist Pierre Moscovici.
