Pope Francis said on Wednesday (November 26) he hoped his visit to Turkey this week will bring "the fruits of peace." The pontiff leaves for a three-day visit to Turkey on Friday (November 28).

"As you know this Friday until Sunday I will take part in my apostolic visit to Turkey. I invite everybody to pray that this trip of Paul to his brother Andrea will bring the fruits of peace, sincere dialogue between religions and understanding within the Turkish nation," Pope Francis told pilgrims in a wet St. Peter's Square during the weekly general audience.

During his visit, the pope will meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. He will also meet Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Istanbul-based spiritual leader of the Orthodox churches that make up the second-largest Christian church family after Roman Catholicism.
