French Senate backs recognition of Palestinian state

After France’s lower house, senators in the upper house of parliament have now approved a resolution calling on Paris to recognise a Palestinian state.
The resolution only narrowly passed, with 153 votes in the Senate, mainly from the left, against 146 votes.
Parliaments in Spain, Britain and Ireland have also backed non-binding resolutions in favour of recognition.
Sweden has gone one further and formally recognised Palestine.
