Nepal quake was a "nightmare waiting to happen"

Images emerging from Kathmandu show the scale of the earthquake disaster.

The quake has destroyed many residential buildings and landmarks, including ancient temples.

This is one of the world’s most densely populated urban centres, and many residential buildings were not earthquake resistant.

It is reported that only a week ago some 50 world scientists gathered in Kathmandu to study the risks if an earthquake struck.

One of the scientists told Britain’s Independent newspaper that the city was a nightmare waiting to happen.

Experts say there was concern about bad construction and a lack of preparation in the event of a big quake.
