Student commits suicide after falling prey to pyramid scheme fraud

Lui, a 19-year-old college student in Taiwan, hung himself after getting ripped off in a pyramid scheme.

Lui got involved in the shady business deal, then dropped out of the college this year. After recruiting 20 friends to participate in the plan and charging them about $170 US dollars each, he gave the money to a man called Huang who was above him in the scheme. Huang ran off with the money, leaving both Lui and his friends without any hope of seeing their investment returned.

Lui's so-called friends then sued him for fraud, which left him overwhelmed with stress and close to an emotional breakdown. Lui inhaled a bottle of nitrogen, then hung himself on the roof of a building near his home. His distraught father said that the money owed was not worth ending his life.
