Silent Sam supporters escorted away by police after standoff at UNC-Chapel Hill

Crowds gathered at the University of Chapel Hill Sunday to show support and opposition for the Silent Sam statue that was toppled in August.

According to local media, the two sides blared loud music and sirens to silence the opposing groups while they were being interviewed.

In the video, opponents of the statue can be seen chanting "Nazis, go home!" as police escorted supporters away.

Last week, the university rejected a $5.3 million proposal to build a new home for the statue, citing concerns about safety and the use of state funds for the project. The plan was also met with criticism from students, faculty and civil rights group on the grounds that the monument glorifies white supremacy and slavery.

The university told reporters that the institution will explore options of moving the statue off campus.
