Annual tomato throwing festival

The annual tomato throwing festival 'Tomatina' or tomato fight has kicked off in Bunol, Spain.

Thousands of revelers descended on the small provincial town to play around inside tomato pulp.

The festival originates back to 1945, and is a big part of the town's annual event calendar. It takes place place on the last Wednesday of every August.

The concept behind the tomatina does not seem to be based on religious or cultural grounds, more of an opportunity for thousands of people to throw over-ripe tomatoes at each other, blow off some steam and have fun as summer draws to an end.

It is estimated that around 20,000 -500,000 tourists descend on the town each year to attend the week long event.
