Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya says Cambodia border dispute should be solved on a bilateral level. He met with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to discuss Thailand's stance ahead of ASEAN meeting in Jakarta this week.
On Sunday, Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said the border dispute with Cambodia should be solved at a bilateral level.
Kasit and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva met to discuss Thailand's stance on the issue ahead of an Association of South East Asian (ASEAN) foreign ministers' meeting in Jakarta.
[Kasit Piromya, Thai Foreign Minister]:
"At the meeting on Tuesday in Jakarta, I will insist that Thailand is ready to use the bilateral mechanism that already exists with Cambodia."
The talks in Jakarta come after the U.N. Security Council said the issue should be resolved between the two neighbors.
Last week, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen proposed that Thailand sign a ceasefire agreement at the ASEAN meeting. But Abhisit rejected the proposal, saying that Thailand had not fired first.
Earlier on Sunday in his weekly TV program, Abhisit said that he had asked UNESCO not to accept Cambodia's development proposals for areas within the disputed territory.
Both sides have been locked in a standoff since July 2008, when the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple was granted UNESCO World Heritage status, which Thailand opposed on grounds that territory around the temple had never been demarcated.
