NTC fighters face fierce resistance

Libya's new leaders say they hope to control the whole country within days - but fighters are meeting stiff resistance as they battle to take control of Muammar Gadaffi's last power bases.

National Transitional Council fighters pushed into Sirte with machine guns and rockets but met shellfire from Gaddafi loyalists.

They have entered the town of Harawa 80 km away and holding it could mean an easier eastern approach.

And in the Southern desert near the Gaddafi stronghold of Sabha, fighters say they are consolidating control and are being welcomed by many locals.
