This is Neil Armstrong in 1969 - the year he became the first person to walk on the moon.

On Friday, Armstrong - who died last month - was laid to rest in a final tribute to one of the defining figures of the 20th Century.

During a ceremony onboard a U.S. warship, his remains were committed to the Atlantic Ocean.

Armstrong's wife, Carol, oversaw the memorial.

A former Navy flyer and test pilot, Armstrong died in late August at age 82 from heart problems.

The commander of the Apollo 11 moon mission, he vaulted to fame when he became the first person to step on lunar surface on July 20, 1969.
