A man is in police custody after an unprovoked knife attack left nine people injured on November 27.

The man, identified in media reports only as Zhou, is understood to have argued with employees at supermarket in the Chinese city of Nanning before the attack. Witnesses say he returned to the supermarket claiming the cashier had failed to hand over noodles he had purchased hours earlier.

Security camera footage shows him produce a small knife and lash out at a male cashier, stabbing him repeatedly in the neck and torso.

He then chased the injured man, stabbing another five employees, two shoppers and a salesman along the way.

All nine were treated at a local hospital for injuries mainly to the stomach and back.

Zhou was arrested at the scene.
