Affluenza Thai kid kills two in high speed crash, but will he serve any time?

AYUTTHAYA, THAILAND — Dashcam footage captures the moment a midsize car traveling in the slow lane on the highway is rear ended at tremendous speed by a black Mercedes-Benz. The crash immediately erupts in a cloud of smoke and debris.

What happened next has caused growing outrage within Thailand. The midsize Ford Fiesta burst into flames and the two inside, a pair of graduate students in their 30s, died at the scene of the accident.
The Mercedes driver, 37-year-old Janepob Verraporn, the son of a rich Thai businessman, survived with minor injuries and refused both blood and drug tests at the scene, and the Thai police respected his wishes. Police say he was driving at an estimated 150 mph.

The fatal March 13 crash has once again sparked the debate about how the wealthy and well-connected in Thailand tend to get away with murder.

Police are now scrambling after criticism for initially mishandling the case. Police have now filed four charges agaisnt Verraporn. Amid the public uproar, he has been charged with reckless driving causing death and property damage, obstructing police operations, drink-driving causing death and driving while unfit.

Verraporn was spared provisional detention after posting $5,700 bail and is currently at one of Bangkok's private hospitals.
