Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 developed by Camelot and published by Nintendo. It’s hard to remember a time before Mario sports games, but during the Nintendo 64 era, the concept was exciting and new. And the two earliest games proved Mario’s natural athletic abilities. The first was Mario Golf, and a year later, it was Mario Tennis. This outstanding tennis game brought together the fun and simplicity of arcade sports games with the iconic characters of the Super Mario franchise. In retrospect, it’s obvious. But in the year 2000, it was ingenious. Developed by Camelot, Mario Tennis is a simple tennis game packed with features. The gameplay is fast and accessible, offering up an impressive roster of 16 characters. That’s only a few less than the GameCube sequel would have. The game offers several single-player modes, but like so many N64 classics, the real draw is its multiplayer. Mario Tennis supports two, three and four-player multiplayer with a variety of party-inducing modes. On a system known for great multiplayer, Mario Tennis fits right in. This video review features video gameplay footage of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
